Although Meribel is a large ski resort in size, it is one of the most charming in the Three Valleys, retaining traditional style, with attractive wooden chalets scattered around the town. Shops, bars and restaurants are plentiful, many of them interesting, unusual and lively.
The resort of Meribel consists of four main
areas: Meribel Centre, Meribel Village, just
down the valley from Meribel Centre (about
5 mins by car), Altiport just above Meribel
Village and Mottaret above the main town
of Meribel Centre.. The picturesque and
the sunny Altiport is situated at the altitude
of 1710, whereas Mottaret at 1750. Both Altipot
and Mottaret are excellent location for the keen skiers who prefer to have immediate access to the slopes rather than proximity to the hub of Meribel town center.. All four are linked into the lift system of the Trois Vallées.
Altiport. Perched at an altitude of 1710 m, on
the edge of Fontenay Forest, with an
exceptional view of the mountains and the resort, stands the small hamlet of Altiport, with four
large wooden chalets, three of them split into
flats, one an excellent hotel with a small
airdrome for tiny planes, all with direct access to the runs.
Meribel Village is the old village, located between the main Meribel resort and La Tania, now connected to the massive 3 Valleys Ski area by a new chairlift to Altiport. The village retains much of its old character, full of traditional buildings and quaint chalets.
Mottaret consists mainly of medium size blocks of flats, almost all with doorstep skiing. There is a variety of bars, restaurants and shops and a very friendly village atmosphere.
